Four key concepts from Betty Edwards's book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and other writings:

• Edges and lines – one-dimensional boundaries between overlapping two-dimensional surfaces
• Negative space – voids, surrounded and surrounding solids
• Relationships – proportions and perspectives
• Light and shadows – shading and texture

... and above all, forget names –depict what is, rather than caricature what it is called ...
